My first newspaper had a full-time staff photographer who was very good at his job. But a funny thing happened when the editors sat down to compile our “Year in Review” photo section: Roughly two-thirds of the photos they selected were mine.

I’m a competent visual journalist who understands how words and images work together to tell a story effectively. Need a fashion spread? Wrong guy. Need simple, solid, well-composed photos, digitally processed and delivered with all the right information, on your deadline? I can do that. Here’s a taste.

For my profile of soldier and community activist Arthur "Pete" Lawrence, the two of us spent a winter day driving around the remote Santee community where he spent his boyhood. I took this shot of Pete at the little AME church his family built, and later noticed that church and man each seemed to say something about the other.
