Interviewing Donald Perry for an hour-long film about his life, commissioned by his family.
Screenwriting has a reputation as a specialized art, and it certainly has its quirks. But here’s what I’ve noticed: no matter the format, quality begins with story and proceeds through clarity.
I write feature-length screenplays (although I’ve never sold one to Hollywood). I write short films that can be produced locally on small budgets. And yes, I’m available to work on film adaptations and original stories. But let’s be realistic: That’s a pretty small market.
I think there’s a bigger market for the ability to ask good questions, weave interview footage into an interesting thread and construct documentary-style films that convey coherent, interesting ideas. Call it video editing if you like, but to me it’s just a form of writing.
